Body Contouring using Fat Transfer

Body contouring using fat transfer is a relatively new cosmetic technique. The aim is to re-sculpt your body profile to create a more pleasing figure and outline. The procedure can be used to shape many areas of your body such as your face, breasts, buttocks, thighs and abdomen.

Surgery actually involves the implementation of two fairly recent cosmetic techniques:

Liposuction is a little over thirty years old, involving the removal of localised fatty deposits to improve the contours of your body. Sometimes this is combined with surgery to remove and tighten excess skin that can be the consequence of using this procedure.

The ‘fat transfer procedure’ has been employed by surgeons for around fifteen years. Following liposuction, the fatty deposits are cleaned using new technology, and then replaced elsewhere in your body to create ‘fullness’. This might apply to your breasts or buttocks for example. The particular appeal of this technique is that your own cells are used. No alien materials are involved as your own fat becomes a natural ‘filler’.

Fat (adipose tissue) contains high levels of stem cells and other regenerative tissue. New technology makes it possible to process and re-use these cells in other parts of your body. The stem cells stimulate blood vessel growth and therefore make it less likely that your body will reject the tissue. Previously, fat was often reabsorbed by the body; sometimes up to seventy per cent of the transfer was lost over time. This meant that the procedure often had to be repeated, which is now no longer the case.

You will undergo a physical examination and the risks and benefits of the ‘fat transfer’ procedure will be discussed with you in detail. The risks are minimal and the main benefit is that your body will not reject the tissue as it might if an alternative filler was used.

liposuction mr hassan shaabanAutologous‘ fat transfer simply means using your own body tissue. Depending on the part of your body that is being treated, you may be given either a local anesthetic along with a sedative, which will relax you, or a general anesthetic. Liposuction will be used to remove fatty tissue from the donor site. This is done using hypodermic needles or a special cannula to limit any damage to the fat cells.

Fat is then spun at high speed in a centrifuge to separate the fat cells from the liquid which has also been removed by the liposuction procedure. Any damaged cells are removed and the whole, cleaned fat cells are then ready for transfer.

The fat cells are then re-injected into the target site on your body. These injections are deep into your body tissue. Sometimes surgical procedures will be used to remove excess skin, but often no surgery is required, which makes this technique minimally invasive and reduces recovery time.

You should notice the results of your procedure almost immediately. There will be some swelling and bruising of the target site, but this will reduce in a few days. Some discomfort is to be expected, but any pain can be managed effectively with regular pain killers such as paracetamol.

Depending on the procedure, you should expect to be able to resume normal activity within a couple of days. The results of your fat transfer should be permanent as a consequence of the new techniques employed by Mr Shaaban. Risks and complications following the use of this technique are very rare, and even less likely when you employ the services of an experienced surgeon such as Mr Hassan Shaaban.
