Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a procedure to enhance or restore the size of your breasts, also referred to as a ‘Breast Enlargement’, ‘Breast Enhancement’, ‘Breast Implants’ or ‘Augmentation Mammoplasty’.

Are you are considering breast augmentation surgery to increase or restore the appearance of your breasts? The most common reasons to consider breast augmentation are:

  • Wanting a better proportioned or more appealing figure
  • Wishing your clothes fit better
  • When pregnancy, ageing or weight-loss has changed the size and/or shape of your breasts
  • To achieve symmetry of the breasts if one of your breasts appears smaller than the other
  • Requiring reconstructive techniques after breast surgery

The most popular type of breast enhancement to increase the size of your breasts is by using breast implants. Mr Hassan Shaaban is very experienced and has performed thousands of breast augmentation procedures; if you are looking for the right type of breast enlargement to suit your individual needs then Mr Shaaban will be happy to discuss the procedure options with you.

A breast augmentation procedure is not the right choice for everyone, but London and Liverpool surgeon Mr Hassan Shaaban finds that many patients feel that a breast enhancement procedure helps their self-confidence and the way they feel about themselves, as well as obviously improving their appearance.

Your consultation with Mr Hassan Shaaban will usually be at Phi Clinic, Harley Street, London, and will last approximately one hour. During your initial consultation, Mr Shaaban will provide a full assessment and discuss your desires and requirements. You will be able to get answers to all of your questions and concerns about a breast enlargement, and Mr Shaaban will determine the best suited breast augmentation procedure for you, tailored to your individual needs.

What makes a good candidate for a Breast Augmentation?

  • Patients that are looking for improvement, not perfection
  • Patients that are physically healthy
  • Patients that are realistic in their expectations and desires

If a breast augmentation with implants is the right procedure for you, then Mr Hassan Shaaban will talk you through the different implant options. All aspects of the implants will be discussed in terms of shape, size, consistency and texture. The type of implant that you choose will usually depend on what kind of look you are going for; some women want a bigger, rounder (anatomical) shape, and others are looking for a more natural, teardrop shape.

If you are happy to go ahead and proceed with your breast augmentation, Mr Hassan will see you for a second consultation closer to the time of surgery.

How long does a Breast Augmentation take?

In usual circumstances, a breast enlargement procedure will be performed within 1-2 hours, under local anaesthetic with sedation. Breast augmentation can also be performed as  day-surgery, or under general anaesthetic with a one-night stay in hospital.

What is involved during a Breast Enlargement surgery?

During a breast augmentation procedure to enlarge the breasts, Mr Hassan Shaaban will make short incisions to insert the implant either behind or in front of the muscle. This depends, again, on what the patient is hoping to achieve; implants positioned behind the muscle often look a bit more natural and authentic than those implants placed in front of the muscle. Once implants are inserted, the incisions will be closed with naturally dissolvable stitches.

What are the possible side effects when undergoing a Breast Enhancement procedure?

It is common to experience some temporary soreness, swelling, and change to sensation in the nipples. Sometimes patients find that their breasts are very sensitive to stimulation for anything up to a few weeks.

What are the risks involved with a Breast Augmentation?

As with any plastic surgery procedure, there are possible risks involved, which are greatly minimised in the hands of a competent, well regarded and board certified surgeon such as Mr Hassan Shaaban. The most common problems are some bleeding or infection, occasionally permanent increases or decreases in the sensitivity of your nipples or skin around the breast, and sometimes capsular contracture (which is the hardening of a patient’s breast due to the formation of the scar tissue situated around the implant).

What is the cost of a Breast Enhancement?

The cost of your breast augmentation will depend on what type of implants you choose and where you choose to go for your surgery. Cost should never be a deal-breaker; don’t scrimp on your plastic surgery as it is an investment as cost-cutting can lead to potentially disastrous circumstances, especially if you are compromising with a less experienced and reputable surgeon.

Immediately after your breast augmentation procedure, it is likely that you will be placed in a surgical dressing; sometimes this will include a surgical support garment or supporting bra. Mr Hassan Shaaban will give you lots of aftercare advice, and might advise that you a wear your support garment for a while post surgery.

Is a Breast Augmentation painful?

As a result of the breast tissue being stretched during the procedure, a certain level of discomfort is often reported by patients that have undergone a breast enlargement. Usually, the first 48 hours after a breast enhancement are the most painful, and if you do experience pain then this is likely to decrease significantly day by day. Mr Shaaban can advise you on the best, most effective ways to treat your pain with various medication options.

How long does it take to recover from a Breast Augmentation?

You should be able to walk around normally immediately after a breast enlargement. Mr Hassan Shaaban will advise that you take a little walk for at least a couple of minutes every couple of hours to help reduce the risk of any blood clot formation in your legs. Mr Shaaban will make sure before you go home that you have detailed information on what to expect post surgery, and that you are aware of all the normal and common symptoms patients have after a breast augmentation procedure.

You can expect to be back to work within 2-4 weeks post breast augmentation, and it is important that you do not part-take in any strenuous exercise for about 4 weeks, and try to minimise all physical activity for at least 2 weeks. Take great care to be gentle with your breasts, especially for the first month after surgery.

The fading of yours scars can take anything from a few months up to a year, and can occasionally take longer. Mr Hassan Shaaban will provide follow up consultations, but be sure to have continued, regular self-examination of the breasts following a breast enlargement.
